Lands Ministry gives two trucks to Gulu City for garbage collection

GULU-The Ministry of Lands Housing and Urban Development has given two Tata trucks to Gulu City for garbage management. The two trucks, registration number UG 0305L and UG 0306L, which cost Shs 185 million each, were given under the Uganda Support for Municipalities Infrastructural Development [USMID] programme.

Isiah Tumwesigye, the Gulu City Town Clerk while receiving and commissioning the two trucks at Gulu City Council headquarters said the trucks will help boost the efforts of the city council to collect and keep the city clean.

Initially, the city council received wheel loaders, bulldozers, and 54 garbage skips which were deployed at various points in the two city divisions of Laroo-pece and Bar-dege Layibi.

“With these additional trucks, our efforts of transporting garbage from the collection points, which initially was challenging, is solved. I now call upon the residents of the city to ensure they don’t litter the streets because we now have enough transport means to take this garbage to the garbage plant,” Tumwesigye said.

Alfred Okwonga, the Gulu City Mayor said the city was only collecting 80 tons of garbage daily of the 120 tons that are supposed to be collected.

According to Okwonga, the trucks will also be used to transport marrum for the rehabilitation and maintenance of access roads within the city.

“We now want to see a clean and accessible Gulu City, with all these equipment’s at our disposal because, for long, the departments and the divisions within the city have been complaining of lack of trucks to collect garbage and transport marrum for the rehabilitation of roads in poor condition,” Okwonga said.
