Kwania school gets equipment for visually impaired pupils

KWANIA – Ikwera Primary School, a government-aided school in Kwania district, has received equipment to facilitate the learning of pupils who are visually impaired.

The items include two desktop computers, an HP printer, two talking calculators, sound recorders, and a CCTV camera among others. It was donated to the school by Kyambogo University with funding from the government of the Netherlands under a special programme dubbed “All We See is Possibility Project”.

Kyebagadha Binasali, Kyambogo University ICT lecturer and a programme technical officer for All We See is Possibility Project said, “We have so far donated an assortment of gadgets to 10 secondary schools in Uganda and trained over 600 special needs teachers.”

“You have not even checked your eyes since you were born and yet the eye is the most important organ. After every six months, you should go for eye checkup,” he said.

Joseph Ogwal, the head teacher of Ikwera Primary School commended the organisation for the donation.  Ogwal is optimistic the gadgets will ease teaching and learning of visually impaired pupils.

“I am very grateful for the gadgets that will aid the teaching and learning of the visually impaired learners in this school. I want to commend All We See is Possibility Project for the initiative,” he said.

Kwania acting district education officer, Samuel Bunga said plans are underway to establish a special needs secondary school in the district to provide education services to the physically challenged learners.

“As a district, we are thinking of creating a special need secondary school for the continuity of learning of special need children. After the primary level, where do they go? Many of our schools do not want to accept and accommodate them because they lack facilities and trained teachers to handle such category of learners,” he said.

Ikwera Primary School has 30 teachers with 1,085 pupils of which 179 are visually impaired.
