KUMI – The Kumi resident district commissioner [RDC], Ahmed Washaki has urged residents in the district and Ugandans at large to embrace a saving culture, saying it is important in wealth creation.
He said there is a need for mindset change among Ugandans if they are to develop themselves and the country at large.
“If Ugandans adopt the saving culture, poverty rate will reduce. When savings increase in Uganda, even the interest government pays on external loans will be paid to Ugandans as they will be able to lend to government,” he said.
Washaki said government aims at organising Ugandans through various government porgrammes such as the Parish Development Model [PDM], and Emyooga Programme to promote a saving culture in the country.
He urged every Ugandan working to save at least 40 percent of the money they earn so that it can be invested in development.
He urged residents to embrace savings if they are to get out of abject poverty.
According to him, reckless drinking of alcohol without putting aside money for future use is dangerous and retards the prosperity of households.
He said alcoholics drink from morning to sunset without planning for their families’ essential needs such as school fees, food, medical care, and clothing.
“Some of the parents are failing to take their children to school because of the poor saving culture and drinking alcohol,” he said.
He said it is the responsibility of every adult in Kumi district and the rest of the country to fight poverty, drunkenness, and promote education.
He cautioned teachers in Kumi district against overdrinking alcohol, saying it has affected learning in schools.
