Kotido mentors and field agents trained to digitise VSLA business transactions

KOTIDO, April 30, 2025 — In a move toward modernising financial systems in Kotido district, mentors and field agents have been trained on how to use the WENDI platform, which is designed to digitise business transactions for Village Savings and Loan Associations [VSLAs], and other organisations like Savings and Credit Cooperative Organisations [SACCOs].
The hands-on training, held at Lamaison Hotel in Kotido town recently, was organised by Nakere Rural Women’s Activists [NARWOA] in partnership with Mercy Corps. The training marks a critical step in shifting local savings groups from paper-based record-keeping to a more secure and efficient digital system.
Developed by PostBank Uganda in partnership with MTN Uganda and Airtel, WENDI is aimed at promoting financial inclusion for Ugandans. It allows users to manage their finances, save, invest, and make payments for various services using a simple mobile phone.
It also allows savings groups to track contributions, loans, and repayments digitally, ensuring more accurate and transparent financial management.
Omara Jonathan, the GIRL-H Project Officer for NARWOA, highlighted the importance of the training, stating, “These mentors are the bridge between innovation and the grassroots. Through them, communities will access tools that improve trust and accountability within savings groups.”
WENDI is a user-friendly, cost-effective digital tool designed specifically for rural communities. With this platform, VSLA members can now monitor their financial activities in real time, reducing the risk of errors or disputes that often arise from traditional paper-based methods.
“The platform is simple and effective. It will help our groups keep better records and reduce misunderstandings,” said Nakiru Paska one of the participants during the training.
During the interactive training, participants had the chance to explore the WENDI platform’s features through real-life scenarios and demonstrations. The hands-on approach helped overcome the initial challenges many participants faced with digital tools, especially as many had little prior experience with similar platforms.
“Learning how to use this technology will empower us to assist our groups in managing their finances more effectively,” said Nangoli Simon Peter another participant.
This initiative goes beyond merely introducing new technology. NARWOA and Mercy Corps aim to equip local mentors with the skills needed to help VSLA groups adopt the platform in their communities. The trained mentors and field agents will return to their respective sub-counties, where they will guide local groups in adopting the WENDI platform.
By empowering individuals, particularly women and youth, who are often the backbone of these savings groups, NARWOA and Mercy Corps are helping create smarter, more inclusive financial systems that can pave the way for long-term economic sustainability.
This project is a part of broader efforts to promote financial inclusion, particularly in rural and underserved communities. With the support of NARWOA and Mercy Corps, local savings groups will not only benefit from the WENDI platform but will also gain a deeper understanding of digital financial management, enabling them to thrive in a rapidly changing world.
The successful digital transformation of VSLA systems in Kotido is expected to be a model for other districts, with the potential to empower thousands of community members across the region.
