UNRA starts maintenance on Nebbi – Goli road after public outcry

NEBBI – Uganda National Roads Authority [UNRA] has started maintenance works on Nebbi Jukia – Goli road following a public outcry on the bad state of the road which has become impassable.

Nebbi Jukia -Goli road to Padeya that both Ugandans and Congolese traders bank on for business for the last two weeks has become impassable. The poor state of the road has affected both business and transportation of goods and services for both Ugandans and Congolese.

The public are still not convinced whether the ongoing road maintenance will not develop further potholes and gullies due to its steepness.

Bonny Muber, a taxi operator who operates this route from Nebbi to Paidha town says, they have diverted their route from Nebbi -Jukia road to Nebbi -Kei road because Jukia has become impassable due to potholes on the road.

Muber added that, he used to spend Shs 30,000 on fuel from Nebbi to Paidha but these days, he spends Shs 40,000 which has lowered his daily returns.

The Member of Parliament for Nebbi Municipality, Suleiman Hashim says, Nebbi Goli custom road especially on Jukia hill has claimed many lives both during rainy and dry seasons because the road normally develops gullies and potholes which makes it impassable.

Hashim added that Nebbi – Goli road needs to be tarmacked because of the heavy trucks on transit to DR-Congo and Zombo district. When it rains, travellers and transporters spend much of their time waiting for the muddy and slippery Jukia hill road to dry up.

Ongier Aldo, a resident of Nebbi town says, Nebbi -Goli road is so dusty to the extent that medical equipment are getting spoiled at Nebbi Hospital and Nebbi district local government where the road passes. So, there is an urgent call to government to tarmac the road to promote both local and international trade.

Ongier further said, many times boda boda riders are attacked by robbers on the bad spots of  Nebbi jukia -Goil road  at night because the rider must slow down the engine in order to negotiate the bad spots.

“Being near to the road, they always hear people being robbed at night making rescue alarms at the bad spots which has made most of the road users more so the boda boda riders diverting their routes to Nebbi Kei -Goli road,” Ongier said.

The Communication Officer UNRA, Allan Sempebwa says, the UNRA teams have reported on site to do the routine road maintenance on Nebbi- Goli Jukia to make it passable before heavy rain starts.

“We responded to the concerns of the public whenever there was any bad spots detected that would affect the transport flows of the general public. That’s why we responded on ground to ensure we rectify Nebbi -Jukia Goli road that was paralysing transport services,” Sempebwa said.
