Karimojong cattle raids: Museveni directs compensation of victims

LIRA – President Yoweri Museveni has directed that people killed or injured during cattle raids carried out by the Karimojong warriors in Lango, Acholi, and Teso sub-regions be compensated.

Meeting political, religious and cultural leaders at Baralegi in Okwang Sub-county, Otuke district, days ago, Museveni said he had directed the Office of the Prime minister to get details of the victims for the government to effect some assistance.

This followed concerns raised by the Otuke district LC5 chairperson, Francis Abola that a total of six people have been killed by the Karimojong warriors while some sustained injujries during the cattle raids.

There has been a series of cattle raids in the areas of Lango, Teso, Acholi and Sebei sub regions and in Otuke alone and according to the police report, 273 livestock have been stolen since January.

Museveni he had asked Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja, to profile the victims and see how government can help them.

According the leaders from Acholi and Lango, so far about 50 people have been killed during the new wave of cattle rustling which resumed in 2018.

Abola said there are three sub-counties (Olilim, Ogor and Ogwete) in the district which severally suffered as a results of the raids.

“There are people who received cattle compensation money and they used the money to buy animals to replace the one which was lost but as I talked now all have gone,” Abola said.

“Also there has been killings by this Karimojong and in a sad note, just two day ago the Karimojong shot dead one man and as I talked we are preparing to burry,” he added.

He said he was in dilemma on what to be done by the government to people whose animal were taken, live lost or sustained injuries.
