Karamoja leaders to be empowered as role models in communities

NAKASEKE, October 19, 2023 – Government has pledged to empower Karamoja leaders as role models to aid the economic transformation of the sub-region.

According to Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja, plans to develop the sub-region are among the National Resistance Movement [NRM] government’s 10-point Programme, adding that leaders are pivotal in the implementation of the programme in order to bring about social and economic change in Karamoja.

Nabbanja who was addressing over 250 local leaders from Karamoja Sub-region at Oliver Reginald Tambo School of Leadership and Pan African Centre for Excellence Kaweweta in Nakaseke district said government is committed to transforming the region by using its own leaders as role models.

“We need you to lead by example, you be the role models in the communities you live in as the only way to change your people and fight poverty,” she said as the leaders underwent ideological orientation training.

She said that leaders need to be change agents if they are to help their communities to transform economically.

The premier said President Yoweri Museveni prioritises the well-being of the people of Karamoja, the reason he established an affirmative ministry under the office of the Prime Minister to address specific challenges affecting the area known for cattle rustling, food insecurity, and harsh climatic conditions like prolonged drought.

She appealed to the leaders to help the people not depend on cattle keeping alone but embrace other activities such as farming to improve their household incomes.

While also addressing Karimojong leaders, Maj. General Henry Matsiko, the Uganda People’s Defence Forces [UPDF] Chief Political Commissar urged them to work together to improve the security situation in the area if development is to take place.

Matsiko said the training of leaders from Karamoja was meant to orient them to the ongoing government development programmes so that the region becomes competitive in the country.

Felix Mark Lochaale, the Karenga district LCV chairperson who spoke on behalf of the leaders, commended government for the training, saying the leaders are now ready and energised to develop Karamoja.

“We are a lot changed team now, with the agenda to change our communities, empower them, and have collective development in the region,” he said.

The leaders trained included LCV chairpersons, district councillors, LCIII chairpersons under their association, “Karamoja Patriotic Leaders”.

During the three-week retreat, the leaders emphasised proper leadership skills, appreciating government programmes and benchmarking on what leaders from Nakaseke district are doing in the socio-economic transformation agenda.

The ideological orientation training was meant to enhance local leaders’ understanding skills, mindset change, teamwork, conflict management, and harmonisation of methods of work.
