Kaguta bridge constructed in Lira

LIRA – The government has commissioned Kaguta Bridge in Agweng sub-county, Lira district to connect two districts of the Lango sub region.

The Minister of Health Dr. Jane Aceng commissioned the bridge on 29th on behalf of President Yoweri Museveni. The bridge was previously called River Moroto.

The bridge constructed at the cost of Shs1.4b will ease the crossing of River Moroto and primarily connects the community of Lira to Otuke according to the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Works and Transport, Bayega waiswa.

In 2004, when the elusive Lord`s Resistance Army [LRA] attacked Barlonyo Internally Displaced Camp and brutally massacred 300 people. President Yoweri Museveni visited the area and pledged to construct a technical school, health center and bridge.

The school was to absorb orphans to acquire technical skills and the bridge was to improve road network and communication.

The building of the bridge kicked off in 2011 and M.S Coil Ltd undertook the construction works which were completed in 2016.

Bayega says, crossing the bridge was a death trap and many lives were lost but its construction is a milestone to the community of Barlonyo and Barjobi in Otuke district.

“The bridge was designed as a three-span 30 meters long-range reinforced concrete bridge and the clear height is 8 meters with a deck of 10 meters,” he says.

“These are evidently a good specification and construction has been done according to the specification,” he adds.

He says even a trailer can pass on the bridge since it is very strong and will last for decades before rehabilitation.

In a message delivered by Dr. Aceng, President Museveni said the government has embarked on developing rail, water, and air transport.

He says apart from the national roads, the government recognizes the important role that districts and community roads play in the socio-economic development of the country.

He says bridges constructed during colonial times have now exceeded their life span and needed replacement.

“I am very grateful when I see the beautiful bridge that was constructed because it is yielding a lot of benefits not to only to the local community but to a wider area,” he says.

He says it allows road communications between the districts of Omoro, Alebtong, Agago, Pader and Gulu then to South Sudan.
