Kabarole youth groups receive Shs 113mln under YLP

The money, which is in the form of a soft loan from government, is meant to help the youth engage in income generating activities.

KABAROLE, July 12, 2024 – Under Youth Livelihood Programme [YLP], at least 18 youth groups in Kabarole district have received a total of  Shs 113 million.

The money, which is in the form of a soft loan from government, is meant to help the youth engage in income-generating activities, create jobs, and get out of poverty.

According to the Kabarole district Chief Administrative Officer [CAO], Stephen Rubaihayo, Some of the beneficiary groups such as Sebitole Youth Goat Rearing Project received Shs 4mln, Kyabwire Boda Boda Youth Project received Shs 11mln, Kasenda Youth Juice Processors received Shs 5mln, Nyabweya Boda Boda project received Shs11mln.

However, Rubaihayo warned beneficiaries against mismanaging the funds and called for transparency and accountability. “There is need for the youth to effectively use the funds to transform their lives and this can be done through transparency and accountability,” he said.

On his part, the Kabarole Resident District Commissioner [RDC], Festus Bandeeba noted that the youth who are not willing to work together will continue to miss many government programmes meant to help them become self-reliant and successful in life.

“I advise the beneficiaries to stay consistent in their ventures in order to benefit as a group. Government has resorted to supporting organized groups to improve their income and they get out of poverty. More programs are still coming up but you cannot benefit if you are not a member of any organized groups,” said Bandeeba.

He appealed to the youth all over the country to use this opportunity of government programs that are coming up in order to be self-reliant and create their own jobs not seeking for the jobs.

“We know unemployment rate is very high in our country but government is trying it’s best to create jobs for the citizens through giving them start-up capital. This is through different programs like YLP, Emyooga, PDM, UWEP, GROW among others,” he added.

He emphasised that to benefit from these programmes, the youth must be organised in groups or Savings and Credit Cooperative Organisations [SACCOs].

He warned the beneficiaries of the government programmes to use the funds given to them effectively in order to benefit them and they get out of poverty.

On his part the Kabarole district chairperson LCV, Richard Rwabuhinga commended government for  such programmes designed to empower the Ugandan youth financially.

He appealed to the beneficiary group leaders to be open to their members and ensure that the received funds are invested into the selected enterprises.

Launched in January 2014, YLP is designed to empower the target youth to harness their socio-economic potential and increase self-employment opportunities and income levels.

The programme targets poor and unemployed youth between 18-30 years who account for 22.7 percent of the Ugandan population of 45.9mln people, according to the preliminary results of the just concluded National Population and Housing Census 2024.
