FORT PORTAL, 7 April 2025 — Farmers and traders in Kabarole district and Fort Portal City have been encouraged to embrace the latest trend in Uganda, where products are being marketed on digital platforms.
The call was made last Wednesday by Kabarole district LCV Chairperson, Richard Rwabuhinga, during the launch of Airtel Uganda’s 4G Network at Mpanga Market in Fort Portal City.
Rwabuhinga emphasised the need for farmers and traders to take advantage of the reliable internet available to expand their customer base beyond traditional markets.
“We are in a digital era where most people have access to the internet. Let’s use this opportunity to market our products. People are making a lot of money online. Just have your data, and you can earn with ease,” he said.
He praised the government for the liberalisation of the telecommunications industry in the country, noting that it has significantly improved communication compared to the past, when even making a simple phone call was a challenge.
“Today, you can sit anywhere and transact business as long as you have data on your phone. Phone calls have become easier due to the reliable network,” he added.
A Boost for Fort Portal’s smart city vision
Rwabuhinga commended Airtel Uganda for enhancing internet access, describing it as a significant step toward Fort Portal’s ambition of becoming a smart city.
“With Airtel Uganda launching 4G in Fort Portal and Kabarole, we are moving closer to our goal. A smart city requires fast internet, as much of the business will be transacted online,” he noted.
He highlighted the importance of high-speed internet in attracting tourists, as many bookings and travel arrangements are done online.
Additionally, he pointed out the city’s aspirations to promote e-commerce and digital innovation, which depend on reliable internet access.
“I urge everyone to use this opportunity to conduct research, create employment, and grow their businesses online,” he advised.
Airtel expands network coverage
Mathias Busulwa, Airtel Uganda’s Rwenzori Region Business Manager, reaffirmed the telecom company’s commitment to improving connectivity.
He revealed that eight new network sites had been launched to enhance internet coverage in Fort Portal and the surrounding areas.
“The new sites include Boma, Mpanga Market, Kitumba, Kagote, and Fort Portal town as a whole. We want to ensure that all areas have strong and reliable connectivity,” Busulwa said.
He further noted that since 2019, Airtel Uganda has been upgrading all its sites to 4G, providing users with faster internet speeds.
Busulwa also shared insights into Airtel Uganda’s extensive presence in the Rwenzori sub-region, mentioning 128 Airtel Money branches, 4,500 agents, and 72 network towers.
However, he cautioned customers against fraudsters, urging them not to share their personal details relating to mobile money accounts.
Responsible use of social media
Fort Portal Central Police’s Officer-in-Charge, Charles Muhereza, advised the public to use social media for constructive purposes rather than misusing it.
“Many people, especially the youth, are wasting this platform by posting meaningless content instead of using it for personal and business development,” Muhereza stated.
He reminded the public about the Computer Misuse Act, warning that anyone who misuses digital platforms could face legal consequences.
“Telecommunication companies have provided us with fast and affordable internet. Let’s use it wisely to market our products, conduct research, and grow financially, instead of spending the whole day engaging in unproductive activities online,” he said.
