NEW DELHI, November 26, 2024 — It is with immense pride and hope that I welcome you to the launch of the United Nations International Year of Cooperatives held during the ICA Global Cooperative Conference 2024 in New Delhi, India.
This initiative celebrates the remarkable impact that cooperatives have on communities around the world and emphasises the vital role they play in addressing the pressing challenges of our time. Cooperatives are more than just businesses; they are a testament to the power of collective action. Rooted in the values of solidarity, democracy, and social responsibility, cooperatives empower individuals to take control of their economic destinies while fostering sustainable development. The International Year of Cooperatives serves as an opportunity to shine a light on the transformative potential of these organisations, demonstrating how they can drive social and economic change.
In a world facing unprecedented challenges – climate change, inequality, and economic instability – cooperatives offer innovative solutions that prioritise people over profit. They have a unique ability to bridge gaps in access to resources, providing vital services to those who are often marginalised. By emphasising community engagement and ethical practices, cooperatives not only create jobs and stimulate local economies but also contribute to social cohesion and resilience. Throughout this year, we will highlight stories of cooperatives that have made a difference, showcasing their contributions to sustainable development goals [SDGs] and their role in building a more just and equitable world. From agricultural cooperatives that empower farmers to urban cooperatives that provide affordable housing, these stories reflect the diverse ways in which cooperatives uplift communities and foster inclusive growth.
Moreover, the International Year of Cooperatives is a call to action for policymakers, businesses, and individuals to recognise and support the cooperative model and the model’s unique identity. We must advocate for policies that enable cooperative development and create an environment where they can thrive. This includes fostering access to finance, promoting education about cooperative principles, and encouraging collaboration between cooperatives and other sectors.
As we embark on this journey, let us also reflect on the rich history of the cooperative movement. It is a history filled with innovation, resilience, and the unwavering belief that together, we can achieve more. The founders of the cooperative movement envisioned a world where individuals could work collaboratively to improve their circumstances, and today, we carry that vision forward.
This year, I encourage each of you to engage with your local cooperatives, learn about their impact, and share their stories. Together, we can amplify the message of cooperation and solidarity, inspiring others to join this movement.
In closing, I would like to extend my heartfelt gratitude to all cooperators around the globe. Your dedication, passion, and hard work are what make the cooperative movement a powerful force for good. Let us celebrate this International Year of Cooperatives not just as a moment in time, but as a catalyst for a more cooperative, sustainable, and equitable world.
Thank you for your commitment to the cooperative ideal. Together, let us continue to nurture the spirit of cooperation and build a brighter future, shared prosperity and a better world for all!
