ADDIS ABABA, October 29, 2025 — Huawei Digital Power and the Cooperative Bank of Oromia [COOP] have deployed next-generation, AI-enabled data centre solutions in Ethiopia to strengthen the reliability, security and sustainability of the country’s fast-growing digital financial services.
The initiative comes as Africa accelerates its digital transformation under the African Union’s Digital Transformation Strategy [2020–2030], which aims to make the digital economy a key driver of continental gross domestic product [GDP] by the end of the decade. Ethiopia has aligned with this vision by prioritising digital finance and mobile payments.
COOP, one of Ethiopia’s top five private banks, is pursuing a “digital-first” strategy, with around 80 per cent of its transactions now conducted through digital channels. The bank has processed more than 3.6 trillion Ethiopian birr [US$ 24.7 billion] via its mobile banking platform and serves over 15 million customers nationwide.
With rapid growth in digital transactions, the bank’s existing IT infrastructure had reached capacity limits, exposing it to operational risks and potential service disruptions. To address these challenges, Huawei Digital Power has implemented AI-based smart power and modular data centre technologies designed to deliver greater energy efficiency and scalability.
The deployment includes Huawei’s FusionModule2000, an integrated modular unit that combines power, cooling, racks, cabling and sensors within a compact architecture. The system enables gradual capacity expansion and uses AI analytics for on-demand cooling, cutting energy consumption for thermal control by 8 to 15 per cent. It also provides real-time monitoring, fault detection and predictive maintenance to reduce operating costs.
Additionally, the UPS5000-E system has been introduced to provide uninterrupted power protection. Its modular design allows maintenance and load adjustments without downtime, improving system availability and reducing engineering and operational costs.
COOP said the new systems will enhance the bank’s ability to maintain secure, continuous services amid rising transaction volumes. The modular and intelligent architecture is expected to lower total cost of ownership through improved energy efficiency and simplified operations while aligning with Ethiopia’s sustainability and digital development goals.
“This deployment provides COOP with a resilient, efficient and scalable data centre foundation for inclusive digital finance,” Huawei Digital Power said in a statement. The company added that it plans to expand collaboration with partners across finance, government, education, healthcare and enterprise sectors to advance secure and energy-efficient infrastructure in Africa.
