Hoima hospital managers call for more financial support
HOIMA- Hoima Regional Referral Hospital officials have asked for more financial support, saying the limited funding from government has crippled the hospital’s service delivery.
Sophie Namasopo, the hospital director says the hospital is overwhelmed the many patients, despite the limited space to accommodate them [ patients ], inadequate senior consultants such as neurosurgeons, and lack CT scan among other essential medical supplies.
She made the remarks days ago as the hospital management was meeting a team of Israeli doctors led by Dr. Hanoah Kashtahn, the chairperson of Scientific Council of Israeli Doctors.
The Israeli doctors with support from SBC Uganda, a company constructing Hoima International Airport and Bill Uganda are seeking bilateral partnership with Hoima Regional Referral Hospital to promote better service delivery.
According to Namasopo, the hospital receives about 100,000 patients per year , 21,000 for specialised care, 22,000 for admission and 5,000 deliveries, with 50 percent being delivered through cesarean section, which strains the theater.
She added that the average bed accuracy is about 200 percent and this, she said, forces the hospital to discharge patients before time to give space to others.
She said that the facility has a vacuum of 50 percent of the needed medical personnel and the wage bill given the facility cannot allow the management to recruit.
Namasopo said recently government procured a CT scan for the hospital, even thopugh it is in transit to Uganda. However, she said the hospital needs money to construct facility to house the CT scan when it arrives.
She said there is a need for development partners to offer support to the hospital to if it is to provide better health service delivery.
She commends SBC Uganda and Israeli doctors for choosing to collaboarate with the hospital, saying once the partnership gets metallised, it will help its medical staff to acquire skills and medical equipment from Israel.
Amos Murisa, the public relations officer SBC Uganda, said once the stakeholders finalise the negotiations, the hospital and Israeli doctors will sign a bilateral memorandum of understanding that will see a team of Israeli doctors deployed at the hospital while at the same time, doctors from the hospital will be facilitated to travel to Israel to share knowledge and health skills.
He added that SBC is also going to commit its corporate social responsibility budget to the hospital to address some challenges affecting the facility.
Hanoah said that they are ready to sign the MOU and demanded the management of the hospital to saw that they are interested and provide a commendation before sending resident Israel doctors.
