LIRA, September 14, 2026 — Headteachers across the country have been urged to join the Association of Secondary School Headteachers of Uganda [ASSHU] Savings and Credit Cooperative Organisation [SACCO] by paying their membership and annual subscription fees.
ASSHU President Zulaika Nabukeera said each member is required to pay Shs100,000 for membership and annual subscription, urging headteachers to take the initiative seriously and join the SACCO, which was established to enhance members’ wellbeing.
She was addressing about 1,200 headteachers and their deputies during the ASSHU Annual General Meeting held recently at St Katherine Secondary School in Lira City.
Nabukeera said the SACCO has accumulated more than Shs 500 million and plans to begin lending to members so that the funds can generate interest to support its sustainability and improve the welfare of teachers.
She commended President Yoweri Museveni for supporting the SACCO with Shs 200 million.
“We are grateful for this money and we wish people start borrowing such that it earns interest at the end of the year,” Nabukeera said, urging members to take the SACCO’s development seriously.
The headteacher of Lira Secondary School and chairperson of ASSHU Lango Region, Isaac Ocoo, also joined the call, saying the SACCO would provide significant benefits to headteachers.
Ocoo said the amount required to join the SACCO was affordable and urged headteachers to take advantage of the opportunity and become members.
He said joining the SACCO would enable headteachers to access financial services and other benefits aimed at improving their welfare.
ASSHU National Treasurer Rehema Kisitu Lutalo said the association had invested the money in a trust fund to ensure financial sustainability and generate returns.
She said ASSHU also plans to establish a leadership centre but will require contributions from members to realise the project.
Lutalo said each headteacher would be required to contribute Shs 50,000 towards the construction of the centre.
“Our project for the construction will cost about Shs 8 billion. What does this mean? It means working together by making contributions and establishing our centre so that next year we can hold the AGM at our centre,” she said.
She said construction of the leadership centre would be undertaken in four phases, with each phase expected to cost about Shs 2 billion until the project is completed.
