Hard work pays: Atingi-Ego confirmed as new Governor of Bank of Uganda

KAMPALA, February 10, 2025 – President Museveni has confirmed Dr Michael Atingi-Ego as the new Governor Bank of Uganda [BoU], finally settling the concerns of bankers and other stakeholders in the local banking industry.

The announcement was made this morning confirming the experienced economist who has served in the position of Deputy Governor since August 2020, after Dr Louise Kasekende who left the institution in January 2020 after serving 10 years.

In the same pronouncement, Prof Augustus Nuwagaba, also an established economist was appointed the new Deputy Governor of the Central Bank that has been serving the public without a substantive Governor following the death of Prof. Emmanuel Tumusiime-Mutebile, in January 2020.

Before becoming the Deputy Governor, Atingi-Ego served as the Executive Director of the Macroeconomic and Financial Management at the Institute of Eastern and Southern Africa [MEFMI] in Harare, Zimbabwe before becoming the Executive Director in charge of Research at the BoU.

In 2008, he served at the International Monetary Fund, before serving as an Economic Policy Analyst at various institutions.

He acquired his first degree from Makerere University before preceding to United Kingdom for his post graduate studies and subsequently obtained a degree of Master of Arts in Economics from the Cardiff Business School, in the United Kingdom and a PhD from Liverpool University, UK.

His career kicked off at the Bank of Uganda rising through the ranks to become the Executive Director, Research. In 2008, Atingi-Ego was assigned by the IMF to be the Deputy Director in charge of Africa.

In May 2022, Atingi-Ego was recognised by African Banker Magazine as the “Central Bank Governor Of The Year”, in recognition of his efforts to tame inflation and maintain foreign exchange stability in Uganda.
