GULU – Gulu district local government has secured Shs1.2 billion for the construction of a modern operating theater and a medical laboratory at Awach Health Facility.
Gulu district Vice Chairperson, Vicky Atim disclosed in an interview that the fund was secured from Enabel, a development partner supporting health and education in the district.
Atim explained that 25 percent of the fund will cater for incentives of the medical staff in the facility while 75 percent will go for investments and medical supplies.
She also commended the strategic partnership with the Organization which she says has contributed to the health care promotion and capacity building of the health workers in the past five years.
The District Health Officer Dr. Kenneth Cana revealed that the construction work is expected to begin in the next three weeks as the district resolved to upgrade the health facility into a general hospital.
He further explained that the Council resolution seeking support from the central government for upgrading Awach Health Centre IV into a general hospital has been submitted to the Ministry of Health.
He added that the upgrade of the facility will improve on the health care services in the district that have remained a challenge for patients who have been forced to move many kilometers to the city to access health care services.
However, result-based financing from the development partner to the district is directed to the selected hospitals and health facilities with good performance of care to the patients.
The Program Manager of Enabel, Margaret Katusiime noted that the Organization has developed a long term plan for supporting health and sanitation in the district.
