GULU, June 24, 2024 – Gulu Archdiocese has received 45 piglets from Operation Wealth Creation [OWC], a programme launched by President Museveni as an intervention to efficiently facilitate national socio-economic transformation, with a focus on raising household incomes and wealth creation by transforming subsistence farmers into commercial farmers.
The piglets which include 15 males and 30 females are meant for the socio-economic transformation of youth under Gulu Archdiocese.
The swine were delivered today to Gulu district Production Department and handed over to Rev. Father Mathew Okun Lagoro, the Project Manager Cassava Commercialisation and Industrialisation Programme in Northern Uganda.
Lagoro said the diocese has for some time been focused on promoting commercialisation of cassava production and value addition and has started on animal husbandry.
He said, “Now that we are starting on the animal husbandry phase, I think the transformation agenda will now become more complete. These piglets will be distributed next week to different institutions under the diocese.”
Dr. Alice Akello Opiyo, Gulu Resident District Commissioner asked the Archdiocese to take advantage of the piglets to reduce poverty among the faithful.
“Go and make good use of these piglets. I know by next year about this time the piglets will have multiplied and more of your flocks can benefit,’ he said. “We don’t want people to come to church when they are poor. The community should be able to build their own church using some of these projects that government has introduced.”
Opiyo added that, “We are happy to be working with the church in socio-economic transformation. As you preach the gospel, preach about wealth. Work hand in hand with the District Veterinary Officer ensure that the pigs remain healthy.”
Lt. Col Obot Olwa, the district operation wealth creation coordinator Gulu city and Gulu district said the district and city have so far received 45 piglets each and another 45 piglets are expected to be delivered for the elderly persons engaged in production.
