Govt urged to repair dilapidated Kakyeka Stadium
MBARARA – The commissioner of Physical Education and Sports in the Ministry of Education and Sports, Rev. Canon Duncans Mugumya has appealed to the government to consider rehabilitating Kakyeka Stadium, saying it is in a sorry state.
While speaking at the recently concluded Uganda Secondary Schools Sports Association [USSSA] games in Mbarara City, Mugumya said Kakyeka Stadium was and still remains a major sports ground in the Ankole Sub-region.
“Kakyeka used to be a home ground of Mbarara FC and we used to repair., Don’t kill our stadium,” Mugumya said.
He said that the dilapidated stadium has no functional toilets, making it difficult for people to ease themselves.
“In the budget of the city [Mbarara City] there should be money to maintain Kakyeka Stadium because other regions are crying to at least get a playground like Kakyeka but I went to the toilet and I found there is no water and the entire place is dirty,” Mugumya said.
He said if government wants to host international sports events, it must work on its stadia first.
However, Ronald Taremwa, Mbarara City Council secretary for finance said there a fight between the city and Mbarara district over ownership of Kakyeka Stadium which has affected its rehabilitation.
The resident city commissioner, Lt. Col. James Mwesigye appealed to the central government to resolve the conflict between the two sides to unlock development of the city.
“From here we are now sending you to the first lady who can whisper and everybody listens. Let her tell the ministry to clear these mess. Why should you have a stadium [Kakyeka Stadium] in Mbarara City yet it is claimed by Mbarara district?” Mwesigye said.
Recently, Housing and Finance Bank offered sponsor the rehabilitation of the stadium but the issue of ownership halted the process.
“The title of the stadium is in the hands of the district and this has brought confusion,” Mwesigye said.
Ankole diocese Bishop Sheldon Mwesigwa challenged the Ministry and Sports to fight cheating in sports. “Let us address cheating both on pitch and in examinations,” Mwesigwa said.
