KAMPALA, November 6, 2024 – Government has provided 146 motorbikes to cities and districts nationwide to support the implementation of the World Bank-funded Generating Growth Opportunities and Productivity for Women Enterprises [ GROW ] project aimed at boosting women-founded enterprises.
The Minister of Gender, Labour, and Social Development, Betty Amongi, officially handed over the motorcycles to the GROW focal point persons at the ministry’s headquarters in Kampala yesterday.
The motorcycles are intended to facilitate the timely monitoring and supervision of project activities, ensuring effective implementation across the country. Minister Amongi urged the focal point persons to use the motorcycles for their intended purpose—mobilizing, facilitating, and overseeing the GROW project’s efforts to support women in small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).
“We aim to provide micro, small, and medium enterprises with the necessary support—skills, affordable capital, and product certification—to help these businesses grow,” Minister Amongi said.
The GROW project, which was recently launched, is part of the government’s initiative to address the needs of women entrepreneurs who are eager to expand their businesses, sustain their self-employment, and create more jobs. With a budget of over Shs 800 billion, the project targets female entrepreneurs, including those in refugee-hosting districts.
The project’s development objective is to increase access to entrepreneurial services such as finance, enabling women entrepreneurs to grow their businesses. GROW project loan facility was launched at Hotel Africana in Kampala recently. Under the initiative, women are advanced loans of between Shs 4 million and Shs 200mln.
