Govt offers tractors to farmers in Alebtong district
SALEBTONG, November 10, 2023 – The government has donated eight walking tractors to sub-counties in Ajuri County, Alebtong district to help farmers boost agricultural production and productivity.
The sub-counties that benefited from the donation include Amugu, Omoro, Abako, Awei, Adwir, Angetta, and Amugu town council.
The Government Chief Whip who is also Ajuri County Member of Parliament, Denis Hamson Obua handed over the machinery at Abako Sub-county headquarters yesterday.
Obua applauded the government for supporting farmers with the advanced farming technologies, saying they will farmers to realise their full potential as they embrace commercial production.
The hand-held tractors were offered through the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries [MAAIF], according Alex Birungi, the engineering assistant in the ministry.
Obua also handed over one hand-held tractor a model farmer, saying the National Resistance Movement [NRM] government is deliberate on boosting agricultural production in the country.
The Alebtong District Woman MP, Dorcas Acen urged farmers to take advantage of the machinery and produce more food for consumption and sale to be able to improve their livelihoods.
She also urged the farmers to embrace the government`s programme of the Parish Development Model [PDM] launched in February 2022, to fight household poverty.
“I want to advise our farmers to use this tractors to increase production and productivity, which in one of the pillars of PDM,” she said.
The Resident District Commissioner, Gilan Akullo pledged total support and commitment to see that the tractors are properly utilised by the farmers.
David Ojom, the LCIII chairperson of Amugu Sub-county commended government for supplying the tractors, saying that the farm implements will help to open up more farmland but also help farmers in the beneficiary sub-counties to minimise the use hand hoes, which are not cost-effective.
The tractor according to Birungi, to plough one acre, each of the tractors requires three litres of diesel, which he said is affordable by the farmers.
