Govt launches construction of Shs 3.8bln seed school in Lira City

LIRA-Government has launched the construction of Railway Seed Secondary School in Lira City East Division, Lira City to champion its mission to provide secondary education in all administrative units and offer affordable education to the population.

The project worth 3.8bln is under the Intergovernmental fiscal transfer [Ugift] programme being bankrolled by the World Bank.

Wangi General Enterprises Company Ltd is undertaking the construction works scheduled to run for 18 months according to the project period.

The site located at Railway Primary School was handed over by the deputy resident city commissioner, Enock Wandera on Tuesday.

The scope of work includes construction of an administration block, ventilated improved pit latrine, three classroom blocks, teachers’ houses, a kitchen, two science laboratories, a playground, a multipurpose hall, and information communication technology library.

The Lira City East Division mayor, George Okello Ayo applauded the Ministry of Education and Sports for the project, saying Railway ward had no government secondary school.

“We want to appreciate the Government to consider giving us money to build the school and what we want now we need quality work,” Okello said during the site handover on Tuesday.

The development brings the number of new seed schools launched recently in the Lango Sub-region to four which include Angetta and Awei in Alebtong, Adok in Dokolo and Railway in Lira City.

Early this year government commissioned eight seed secondary schools in the sub-region worth Shs 16.8bln.

The schools include Aduku in Kwania, Apac, Okwerdot in Kole, Muntu in Amolatar, Abia in Alebtong, Ogor in Otuke, Bata in Dokolo, and Agali in Lira districts.

Okello Ayo appealed to government to build another seed school in Iwal ward since the area has no secondary school.

Wandera cautioned the contractor against shoddy work warning that the contract stands to be terminated if the work is unsatisfactory.
