Gov’t extends dedicated power line to Lira Hospital

The Shs 1.7 billion project, being executed by Hest Engineers Company Ltd., is scheduled to be completed within two months before being handed over to the hospital

LIRA, August 16, 2024 – Government has initiated the extension of a dedicated power line to Lira Regional Referral Hospital to address frequent power interruptions.

The Shs 1.7 billion project, being executed by Hest Engineers Company Ltd., is scheduled to be completed within two months before being handed over to the hospital.

Samuel Magezi, Project Investment Manager at UMEME, stated that the project aims to ensure a reliable power supply and will cover a distance of 2.7 kilometrEs. “Our goal is to deliver consistent and high-quality electricity to Lira Regional Referral Hospital,” he said.

Peter Kaujju, Head of Communication and Marketing at UMEME, noted that the government is working on various projects to improve power supply to hospitals across the country. Hospitals in Mbale, Mbarara, Entebbe, Kawempe, and Kirudu are among those benefiting from similar projects.

“This initiative will ensure a stable electricity supply, which is crucial for patient care and the operation of hospital equipment,” Kaujju said.

He explained that Lira Hospital has previously shared a power line with multiple customers, causing significant supply issues. With the new dedicated line, the hospital will have a reliable power source, independent of the old line’s performance.

Kaujju also warned against vandalism of power lines, urging communities to remain vigilant. “Vandalism disrupts power supply for entire communities and incurs substantial costs. Penalties for vandalism can exceed Shs 400 million,” he added.

On his part, Nathan Onyaci, Director of Lira Regional Referral Hospital, expressed gratitude for the new power line. “Power interruptions have been a significant issue for us. We often have to rely on an expensive generator that consumes 20 liters of fuel per hour,” he said.

Onyaci cited a recent power outage that severely impacted hospital operations. “Power interruptions not only damage equipment but can also jeopardise patient care by disrupting oxygen production and essential services like dialysis,” he noted.
