Govt committed to disbursing PDM funds, says gov’t chief whip
ALEBTONG – The Government of Uganda is committed to disbursing funds for the implementation of the Parish Development Model [PDM] and Emyooga Programme in a bid to improve people`s livelihoods, according to Denis Hamson Obua, the government chief.
Obua said despite criticisms targeting the implementation of the two programmes, they will register successes in a few years to come. The programmes aim at fighting poverty and creating wealth in households.
Addressing residents of Amugu Sub-county in Alebtong district on Monday, Obua who was in the area to monitor the government programmes, said the two programmes will boost household incomes.
The government chief whip called upon people who have not formed groups to do so, saying the programmes mostly target organised groups.
“The programme will not fail as being claimed by the opposition because government is releasing money timely and effectively to see successful implementation,” he said.
Recently, the Otuke County Member of Parliament, Paul Omara expressed disappointment over the delays in transferring the PDM funds to the beneficiaries’ bank accounts.
He said government in the current financial year 2023/2024 appropriated over one trillion shillings for the PDM.
However, Obua said government was on the right track and that after five years, people’s livelihoods will change.
He said both the PDM and Emyooga programmes cover one of the principles of the National Resistance Movement [NRM] Party, which is the socio-economic transformation of the country.
Emyooga, a presidential initiative on wealth and job creation, was launched in August 2019 as part of the broad government strategy targeting to transform 68 percent of homesteads from subsistence to market-oriented production with the overall objective of promoting job creation and improving household incomes.
The initiative is centered on various 18 categories covering majority of the hitherto, financially excluded Ugandans engaged in similar specialised enterprise categories such as boda boda riders, salonists, welders, carpenters, and drivers, among others.
On the other hand, the PDM, which was launched in February 2022, to move 3.5 million households still in subsistence economy to the money economy, proposes building infrastructure and systems that support the processing and marketing of Uganda’s agricultural products.
