Gov’t commits 300m to rehabilitate 10 roads in Agago

AGAGO – The Ministry of Finance, Planning and Economic Development (MFPED) has allocated Shs 300 million to Agago district local government for the rehabilitation of 10 community access roads in the next financial year 2022/2023. The government plans to spend about Shs 47. 3 trillion.

The roads that have been earmarked for rehabilitation include; Abone Health center III through Kazi Kazi Primary School to Arum Sub County headquarters, Geregere- Omot road, Gereger to Agweng Primary School, Omot trading center through Awonodwer primary school to Otuke district border, Omot trading center through Okol Primary school to Otuke border.

Others are Corner Polcani to Obolokome road, Ojuu, Buluzi to Wangapiyo road, Cuk Cungibil -Abone primary school through Kwaduku to Alyek Primary School road, Lamiyo center through Laminonyula primary school to Arum primary school and Lira Palwo to Acuru road.

Leonard Ojok Opiyo, the LCV Chairperson of Agago district says that the roads have not been rehabilitated for years now.

He says as a result of the heavy rains experienced last year, some of the roads are in an impassable state affecting trade, education, health services among others.

Ojok says that money committed by the Finance Ministry will be budgeted and utilized in the next financial year since the finance ministry says it will be disbursed to the district in the next financial year.

Ricky Richard Anywar, the Agago West Member of Parliament, where all the 10 roads are located says the poor road conditions have hindered efforts and operations by the security to counter and fight off cattle raiders mostly from Karamoja.

Anywar says that several people including expectant mothers and others who are sick have lost their lives due to the poor road condition.

With the rehabilitation of the road certain, Anywar says that access to markets especially for the community members who are predominantly farmers will be improved, security of the locals and their animals will be improved since security personnel can easily carry out their operations among others.

In a letter dated  March 16, 2022, the Finance ministry’s Permanent Secretary/Secretary to the Treasury, Ramathan confirmed that the ministry will give the 300 million shillings to the district local government under the transitional development grant which is to be allocated in the 2022/23 financial year budget.

Agago district borders Lango Sub-region and neighboring South Sudan as well as the Karamoja Sub-region in which locals carry out businesses.
