Gov’t begins disbursement of additional Shs 20mln to Emyooga SACCOs in Bunyoro

The development was announced during a recent meeting organised by the Bunyoro Sub-region Emyooga Missionaries Mobilisation Team at Sir Tito Winyi Playground in Kikuube district

KIKUUBE, February 25, 2026 — The Government of Uganda, through the Microfinance Support Centre [MSC], has begun disbursing an additional Shs 20 million to each active Emyooga Savings and Credit Cooperative [SACCO] in the Bunyoro Subregion.

The development was announced during a recent meeting organised by the Bunyoro Sub-region Emyooga Missionaries Mobilisation Team at Sir Tito Winyi Playground in Kikuube district.

Tadeo Akugizibwe, an officer at MSC, said the funds are intended to strengthen all Emyooga SACCOs across the region. He explained that every SACCO, including those that failed to recover funds from members during the initial phase, will receive the additional financing.

He added that training programmes for SACCO members have been launched to address challenges encountered in the first phase of the project.

“Even those SACCOs that failed to recover the money will not be discriminated against; all will receive the Shs 20 million. We do not intend to close any SACCO. Instead, we are equipping members with the necessary training to ensure that the mistakes made in the first phase are not repeated. This funding is intended to give them a second chance,” he said.

However, Akugizibwe noted that SACCOs seeking the additional funds must present an audit report.

He emphasised that annual auditing of books of accounts is a policy requirement and that MSC will work closely with district commercial offices to ensure compliance before further funds are released.

Godwin Angalia, the Kikuube Resident District Commissioner, revealed that eight Emyooga SACCOs in the district have so far received the additional Shs 20 million.

He said district authorities are continuing to engage SACCO members to encourage investment in profitable ventures. During these engagements, officials discovered that several SACCOs had mismanaged funds, and measures are being put in place to prevent a recurrence.

Florence Asaba, Chairperson of the Bunyoro Sub-region Emyooga Missionaries Mobilisation Team, said the team has traversed the region sensitising beneficiaries on the importance of repaying loans and properly utilising funds, particularly through active participation in agriculture.

Asaba, who also serves as Chairperson of Hoima West Women Emyooga SACCO, noted that members who invest in farming will be well positioned to supply produce to oil and gas companies operating in the Albertine Graben.

Launched in August 2019, the Emyooga Programme is a presidential initiative aimed at boosting household incomes and creating jobs by transitioning 68 per cent of subsistence households into the money economy. The programme provides seed capital to specialised SACCOs catering for 18 interest-based groups, including boda boda riders, market vendors, restaurant owners, journalists, welders, mechanics, taxi drivers and tailors, among others.
