Government building youth sexual reproductive health centre at Lira University

LIRA – The government is constructing a youth sexual reproductive health centre at Lira University to improve on the youth reproductive healthcare provision.

A single stored building with an approximate floor area of 554 square meters will cost Shs 365m and will be completed by June 2022.

The University’s Senior Communications Officer, Patrick Opio said, the construction is being undertaken by NATO Engineering Ltd and supervised by the University Estates Department.

“The building is designed to have a lecture theatre, two lecture rooms and six administrative offices,” Opio said.

“It has two consultation rooms for reproductive health services and two board rooms. It is expected to be completed and handed over by the end of June 2022,” he adds.

He further added that under the presidential initiative on skilling the youth in the Lango sub-region, the construction of the youth center at the University has been completed and is awaiting handover.

The center is intended to impart practical skills to the youth to enable them to be gainfully employed. The facilities include; workshops, administrative offices, dormitories, dining and or multi-purpose hall and sanitation facilities.

The University vice chancellor, Prof Jasper Ogwal Okeng explained that the skills to be imparted include; brick laying and concrete practice, carpentry and joinery, welding and metal fabrication including tailoring and knitting.

Others include bakery, coffee processing, maize processing and shoe making.

Prof Ogwal said, next to the centre is a five-acre demonstration farm where the youth will have to be introduced to modern farming practices.

The university sits on 621 acres of land and Uganda National Metrological Authority has installed its third weather radar at the institution. Law Development Centre (LDC) as well has established its study center there.
