GM Tumpeco explains scarcity of number plates

KAMPALA, September 12, 2024 – GM Tumpeco, Uganda’s leading manufacturer of vehicle number plates, has attributed the current scarcity of the materials to delays by the government. The company that partners with Arnold Brooklyn Company [ABC] Limited, claims that the government’s slow progress in computerising the number plate system has hindered their production capabilities.

Elvis Ssekyanzi, Executive Director of GM Tumpeco, stated that they are managing the temporary shortage and are optimistic about collaborating with the government on the upcoming rollout of digital plates. “The postponement of the digital number plates launch has caused uncertainty in our supply chain,” Ssekyanzi explained.

He also mentioned that the companies have recently received a new shipment of number plates, which should help stabilise market demand. “For the past 24 years, GM Tumpeco and ABC Limited have consistently delivered without shortages. We are committed to maintaining this level of reliability and consistency,” Ssekyanzi added.

Puri Jyot, General Manager of ABC Limited, emphasised the importance of aligning production cycles with government timelines to prevent supply disruptions. “We have always worked closely with the Ministry of Works and Transport to ensure the availability of number plates for Ugandans,” Jyot said.

The companies have urged the government to consider long-term contracts to mitigate such disruptions, particularly given the uncertainties surrounding the launch of digital plates.

GM Tumpeco has been supplying motor vehicle plates in Uganda for the past 24 years.
