Gov’t to compensate South Bukedi Cooperative Union

TORORO-Government has revealed plans to compensate South Bukedi Cooperative Union Limited for the loss suffered during the political instability.

The State Minister for Cooperatives, Fredrick Gume, said the government plan to compensate all cooperatives that lost property during political instability.

He said South Bukedi Cooperative Union is among those listed for verification of their claims.

“The Cooperatives should ensure proper governance, bookkeeping, and accountability so as to achieve success of the Unions,” Gume said.

He made the remarks last week during a capacity-building workshop sponsored by Stanbic bank in collaboration with Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa [AGRA] and REIN group at Rock Classic Tororo.

The workshop was attended by Members of South Bukedi Cooperative Union and other stakeholders including officials from Tororo, Butaleja, and Busia districts.

The chairman of the union, Geoffrey Ekanya, reiterated the need to transform Bukedi region into a productive region with households able to create wealth for themselves.

“Poverty level is high in Bukedi Sub-region. We need efforts to fight this poverty,” Ekanya said.

The Uganda Bureau of statistics’ new National Household Survey report ranks Busoga, Bukidi, and Acholi as regions having the highest number of people living in poverty.

According to Vincent Ssenono from the directorate of social-economic surveys, while releasing the Uganda National Household survey 2019/20 report which indicated that the number of people living in poverty in Busoga stands at 14 percent followed by Bukedi region at 10.4 percent, and Acholi sub-region standing at 10.3 percent.

“I thanked Stanbic bank and partners for the capacity building workshop conducted at a time when government is promoting the Parish Development Model [PDM] which aims at transforming households from subsistence to a commercial economy,” Tororo Deputy Resident District Commissioner,” Albert Amula said.

He told members how the training supplements the PDM and its pillar of financial inclusion.

The RDC also challenged the members of the unions to be fully committed to capacity-building training that will be undertaken by partners.

In 2007, a commission of inquiry was instituted to investigate the management of South Bukedi Cooperative Union Limited. The commission was instituted after a group of people wrote an anonymous letter to the Inspector General of Government alleging corruption and mismanagement of the companies owned by the South Bukedi Cooperative Union.
