ADJUMANI-At least 424 residents of Ogolo North and South in Arinyapi SubCounty in Adjumani district are homeless after floods submerged their homes and gardens following heavy rain downpour.
The floods in the two areas, according to Charles Acidri, a resident of Ogolo South Village, happened after River Tete burst its banks.
Acidri said Ogolo Health Centre was submerged by floods, leaving health care provision almost impossible.
Ben Anyama, the LCV Chairperson Adjumani district told our reporter that a team of disaster management committee have been dispatched to the affected areas to carry out an assessment of the impact of the floods before reporting to the Office of the Prime Minister.
Anyama said the district has been receiving a heavy downpour of rains in recent times. He added that they have also been sensitising the members of the community to avoid settlement in lowlands to avoid being affected by the floods.
Jessica Ababiku, the Adjumani district woman Member of Parliament said Elegu Parish in Arinyapi has also been flooded following the heavy rains experienced in the area in the past week.
Ababiku now wants the Office of the Prime Minister to intervene, and provide emergency supplies including food, temporary shelter, beddings, and utensils among others.
Ababiku also wants the government to consider relocating locals who are areas prone to floods to relatively higher grounds.
“Our people in Arinyapi Sub County especially have been experiencing floods yearly for the past three years now. The OPM should now consider relocating these people to higher grounds and as leaders, we will support this move,” Ababiku said.
