Fishing: Amolatar district boss demands withdrawal of UPDF from L. Kyoga

AMOLATAR, October 28, 2024 — Geoffrey Ocen Kiring, the LC5 Chairperson of Amolatar district, has called for an amendment to the Fisheries and Aquaculture Act, 2023, to allow fishermen to use boats that match their earnings. He also urged the withdrawal of the Uganda People’s Defence Forces’ Fisheries Protection Unit [FPU] from Lake Kyoga, which serves several districts.

During a recent media briefing at the district headquarters, Ocen emphasised his commitment to advocating for the rights of local fishing communities whose livelihoods depend on the lake. He held the press conference to announce his intention to contest for the Kioga North Parliamentary seat in 2026 when general elections in the country are to be held.

Ocen noted that many fishermen are financially constrained and unable to afford the engine boats mandated by the government. “I will fight for the rights of local fishermen so they can use boats that align with their incomes,” he said.

The FPU has faced accusations of human rights abuses while carrying out their mandate to regulate fishing among local communities. Ocen recommended that the government recruit fish guards to work alongside landing site committees to manage the lakes more effectively.

Rebo Ongu, the LC3 Chairperson of Namasale Sub-county, reported an improvement in relations between fishermen and soldiers, attributing this to a series of meetings aimed at resolving pressing issues. “We are pleased with the soldiers because they are treating people better than before, thanks to the roundtable discussions,” he said.

Fred Ogwang, a resident of Alemere, highlighted the importance of fishing as a primary livelihood for many individuals living near the lake.
