Nairobi ready to host 10th TCAMCCO this month

KAMPALA-The 10th Technical Committee of the Africa Ministerial Cooperative Conference [ TCAMCCO ] will be held in Nairobi, Kenya, from May 22-24, 2023, according to International Cooperative Alliance Africa [ICA-Africa], a Region of ICA.

“We are pleased to invite you to the 10th Technical Committee of the Africa Ministerial Cooperative Conference [TCAMCCO] that will be held from May 22nd to May 24th 2023 in Nairobi, Kenya,” says ICA-Africa in a public notice urging those intending to participate in the conference to begin registering.

ICA-Africa says the theme for this year’s conference is “Transforming Cooperatives for a Stronger Africa: Building Better Co-operative Identity, Sustaining Cooperation, and Reinforcing Institutional Capacity”.

While the general objective of the conference is to bring government officials, cooperative leaders and other stakeholders in the forum to deliberate on how best cooperatives could foster accelerated cooperation amongst themselves at national, regional, and global level.

Companies and organisations willing to sponsor the conference are required to pay between US$ 500 and US$ 10,000 or above, with payments to be made in an account in the Cooperative Bank of Kenya, which has been nominated in the category of Bank of the Year in the African Banker Awards 2023.

Some of the key participants in Africa’s cooperative sector will include: David. K. Obonyo Commissioner for Cooperative Development Kenya, Regional Director, ICA-Africa: Dr. Chiyoge B. Sifa, Cooperative Alliance of Kenya [CAK Daniel Marube, Vice President ICA-Africa and chairman Kenya Union of Savings & Credit Co-operatives [KUSCCO] Limited, George Magutu

Others are: ICA-Africa President and President Cooperative Federation of Nigeria [CFN]- High Chief Ayeola Oriyomi, Commissioner for Cooperative Development; State Department of Cooperatives David. K. Obonyo and Patrick Kiburi Kilemi, Principal Secretary in the Ministry of Co-operatives and Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises [MSMEs] Development, Kenya.

During the Regional Conference, Dr. Chiyoge B. Sifa, the Regional Director, ICA, will present a background Paper: “Transforming Co-operatives for a stronger Africa: Building Better Co-operative Identity, Sustaining Cooperation and Reinforcing Institutional Capacity”.

There will also be paper presentations on: Re-imagining Cooperative Identity for a Stronger Africa: Cooperatives as Builders of the Economic and Social Fabric; Leveraging on the African culture to accelerate the development of cooperatives in Africa.

Other topics lined up for presentations are: Cooperatives for African development: Best practices/case studies Opportunities Challenges of Cooperative Development in Africa; Promoting effective membership participation in Cooperatives; Building back better with cooperatives in post-conflict contexts in Africa.

Further Cooperative practitioners, development partners, private and public entities will hold panel discussions will be held on: Sustaining Cooperation through stronger Networks, Trade, Strategic Partnership, Financial Inclusion, and Cooperative Professionalism.

Discussions will also touch on:  Sustaining cooperation through stronger networks; Building successful partnerships for accelerated cooperative development in Africa Cooperative to Cooperative trade; Promoting financial inclusion through cooperatives for development in Africa; Management of cooperative enterprise networks.

There will also be scientific paper presentations on: Cooperative Structures’ Tenets Legal Frameworks focusing on:  Preservation and promotion of cooperative identity in national legal frameworks; Revision of legal framework and tenets: Opportunities and challenges; Comparative analysis of cooperative law and development; Instruments and policies for cooperative governance: Best practices/case studies.

Finally, participants at the conference will come up with recommendations to better the cooperative movement in Africa.

Last year, a similar conference was held in Mombasa, Kenya from May 23-27, 2022 under the theme, ‘Accelerating Cooperation Among Cooperatives in the Post Covid-19 Era.’

In its 2023-2033 Africa Cooperative Development Strategy themed ‘One Cooperative One Africa’, ICA-Africa sets out the vision and mission for the sector, with recommended objectives and strategies for both the movement and African States.

The strategy is to implemented within the three strategic areas namely; promotion of Cooperative identity, cooperation among cooperatives, and institutional capacity for effective service delivery. The major focus is to promote and strengthen the Cooperative movement in the region and provide demand-driven services and products.
