First Lady Janet Museveni urges youth to embrace wealth creation programmes

HOIMA, February 24, 2025 –– The First Lady and Minister of Education and Sports, Janet Kataaha Museveni, has urged Ugandan youth to embrace government’s wealth creation programmes as a means to escape poverty.

She highlighted that President Yoweri Museveni has initiated several programmes, including Emyooga, Operation Wealth Creation [OWC], and the Parish Development Model [PDM], all aimed at eradicating poverty. She called on the youth to take full advantage of these programmes.

“So, I call upon you to support the vision of the President [Musevni], especially in creating wealth for the country. I commission you today to be change-makers in wealth creation. We do not want to see poor people. Yes, our people are poor, but the focus of our government is to eliminate poverty,” said the minister.

She also stressed the importance of engaging the youth in the fight against corruption, describing corruption as an evil that has negatively impacted service delivery, particularly in the health and education sectors. She emphasised the need for young people, especially students, to grow up understanding the damaging effects of corruption.

The First Lady’s call was made during a message delivered on her behalf by the Minister of State for Primary Education, Joyce Moriku Kaducu, on Saturday, at the passing-out ceremony of 1,029 students from Hoima School of Nursing and Midwifery. The students had completed a one-week patriotism training course.

She urged the youth to embrace patriotism and dedicate their energy to the development of the country. She noted the importance of loving one’s country and avoiding manipulation by self-interested individuals. She encouraged the youth to use their skills and potential to contribute to Uganda’s socio-economic development.

“I have been told that you have learned and accepted to love your country, Uganda. All of us, this is our country. To be patriotic is to love our country; it is the only country we have. If we do not love our country, where else can we go? I cannot freely go to any other country to get citizenship because I belong to Uganda. So, it is right and fitting for all of us to love our country. When I love myself, I love my country. I love my country, I love myself. And when you love yourself, you remain healthy to transform your country. When you want to transform your country, focus on positive things,” she said.

Chief trainer, Lt. Col. Akasius Mpabaisi, stated that during the training, the students, now known as patriots, had sessions on various topics, including: political ideological orientation, the political history of Uganda, career progression, financial literacy, the importance of having a transparent society, the laws of socio-economic transformation, crime prevention, self-defence, and physical workouts.

He challenged the patriots to use the knowledge they had acquired to ensure they become responsible citizens and patriots. He also warned them against leading reckless lifestyles, such as engaging in sexual immorality or alcoholism, which could expose them to HIV/AIDS and early pregnancies.

The School Principal, Mark Kalanzi, thanked the Patriotism Secretariat for initiating the training, which he believed had empowered the students with valuable knowledge and skills that would help them navigate and thrive in a competitive society.
