FC Barcelona, UNHCR ink pact to support refugee children

BARCELONA– Spanish football giants, FC Barcelona have announced a sponsorship deal with the United Nations High Commission for Refugees [UNHCR] that foresees the firm’s logo appearing in front of the men’s and women’s jersey. The club stated that this deal is to show its support for refugee children in Uganda and other countries.

The logo will appear during the LaLiga 2022/23 season and will showcase the club’s support for the people who were forced to leave their homes under tough circumstances.

Previously FC Barcelona, run as a cooperative, provided their support to the world’s children as they partnered with UNICEF in 2006. The partnership ran for 15 long years. This deal will replace the UNICEF logo with UNHCR.

“Our commitment is to make the dreams of the most vulnerable become a reality, based on the belief that all children and young people have the right to the same opportunities,” Barcelona president Joan Laporta said.

“It’s a game we need to play and which UNHCR has allowed us play in their league. It’s our Super League and we’re very proud of it.”

The partnership will last four seasons, with the club’s foundation donating 400,000 euros ($417,360) every season to four UNHCR initiatives in Colombia, Uganda, Turkey, and Malaysia. Uganda is one of the countries in the world with a high number of refugees, estimated at 1.5 million, mostly from South Sudan and the Democractic Republic of Congo [DRC].

UN High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi said, “Football brings joy to billions of fans around the world.

“It also provides a transformational outlet for millions of refugee children each day as it promotes positive mental and physical wellbeing, builds confidence and skills, helps keep children in school, and empowers women and girls.”
