Excitement as Hoima City gets modern abattoir

HOIMA, February 14, 2024 – Residents in Hoima City are excited about the ongoing construction of the modern abattoir in Kyentale Ward in Hoima West Division.

The construction of the much-needed facility valued at Shs 2 billion started last year with the funding being availed by the World Bank Group under the Uganda Support to Municipal Infrastructure Development [USMID].

The modern facility is expected to save people who have been consuming meat from the nearby condemned slaughtering area located in Kiryateete East also in Hoima City. The current slaughter area is characterised by a stench and flies hovering over a heap of uncollected animal remains.

Godfrey Kutegeka, a butcher who doubles as the Chairperson Hoima Central Market said poor hygiene at the current slaughter area has been affecting beef business in Hoima City.

For instance, he noted that they are unable to supply beef to those working in the oil & gas sector because of the compromised quality.

However, he was optimistic that if the modern abattoir gets completed, the quality of meat will improve, and help butchers get contracts in the oil & gas sector since the latter is keen on health standards.

Joseph Tumuboine, a resident of Hoima City and businessman commended government for building the new abattoir, noting that many residents in the city had stopped consuming meat prepared at the old facility which has poor hygiene.

The Deputy Mayor Hoima City, Sylvia Nalumaga said that they expect to complete the project in June this year, adding that construction works currently stand at 80 percent.

The abattoir is being built by China Chongqing International Construction Corporation [CICO]. She noted that all the roads around the new modern slaughter slab has been tarmacked.

“This new modern abattoir is going bring us development because our business community in Hoima City have been losing out on opportunities especially in oil & gas sector. When it comes to meat suppliers, Hoima City was not considered because of our abattoir,” she said.
