Euro Coop Calls for a Strong Green Claims Directive to Combat Greenwashing
LONDON, January 27, 2025 – Euro Coop has joined leading organisations in signing an open letter urging Members of the European Parliament and EU Ministers to adopt a robust Green Claims Directive.
The directive is essential for combating greenwashing, rebuilding consumer trust, and fostering sustainable consumption across Europe.
Greenwashing is the act of making false or misleading statements about the environmental benefits of a product or practice. It can be a way for companies to continue or expand their polluting as well as related harmful behaviors, all while gaming the system or profiting off well-intentioned, sustainably minded consumers.
The letter published on January 27, emphasises the need for:
Mandatory pre-market verification of environmental claims to ensure transparency and fairness.
A ban on misleading offsetting practices that do not align with scientific evidence.
These measures are critical to providing consumers with accurate information while supporting genuinely sustainable businesses. By ensuring that environmental claims are credible and verifiable, the directive will advance the goals of the European Green Deal and promote sustainable consumption across the EU.
Euro Coop remains committed to advocating for policies that empower consumers to make informed, sustainable choices.
