Equity Bank empowers Uganda’s top 2024 UACE students

As part of its commitment to youth empowerment, the Bank selects the top-performing boy and girl from each district where it operates a branch

KAMPALA, May 7, 2025 – Equity Bank Uganda is nurturing the next generation of leaders by mentoring 100 exceptional students who excelled in the 2024 Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education [UACE] examinations.

As part of its commitment to youth empowerment, the Bank selects the top-performing boy and girl from each district where it operates a branch. These 100 scholars are now part of the fourth cohort of the prestigious Equity Leaders Program [ELP] 2025.

The programme offers more than just recognition. Beneficiaries receive paid internships, intensive college counselling, and support for applications to top global institutions, including Ivy League universities.

The scholars are currently undergoing a one-week induction at African Bible University in Lubowa, Wakiso district, before being deployed to Equity Bank branches nationwide for a three-month internship. During this period, they will gain hands-on experience in various departments and receive a stipend.

“We are grooming leaders not just for Uganda, but for the global stage, so Africa has a voice at the table,” said Gift Shoko, Managing Director of Equity Bank Uganda, during the induction on Monday.

“Leadership is never made in simple ways – don’t expect an easy journey. Leaders rise like eagles, soaring above the storms,” he added, urging scholars to embrace resilience and purpose.

Encouraging them to think long-term, Shoko challenged the students to develop a personal vision:“ How do you see yourself in the next 20 years? Even in the storm, be resilient,” he said.

Drawing from personal experience, he noted, “I always tell young people to test before trusting. What you see isn’t always what you get. I tell young girls in particular: speak to yourself, direct yourself, and stay true to yourself. The world can be deceiving – let your inner voice guide you. Write down your dreams. Keep them alive.”

Shoko concluded his address with advice inspired by his role as a parent: “Two principles I taught my daughters: First, there is no such thing as a free lunch – never accept one. Nature and God never made such a thing. Second, if it is to be, it is up to me. Own your journey. Take personal responsibility every day.”

Since its inception in 2022, the Equity Leaders Program has supported over 125 students to secure placements in leading global universities. Notably, 13 former beneficiaries have been admitted to Harvard University. In Uganda, Equity Bank has established leadership and innovation hubs in various universities to foster entrepreneurship, mentorship, and digital engagement within the bank’s ecosystem.

“Seventeen of our former ELP scholars are now full-time employees at Equity Bank,” Shoko revealed, “and many more are making an impact in university communities and alumni networks.”

Margaret Lukowe, Marketing Manager at Equity Bank, also addressed the scholars, offering insight into the bank’s marketing approach: “Marketing at Equity is not just about promotion. It’s about supporting every banking department and aligning with sectors across Uganda’s economy,” she explained.

One of the programme’s inspiring success stories, Garvin Alimu, shared his journey: “After ELP, I applied to 18 universities abroad and was accepted at Harvard University.”

Garvin highlighted the importance of resilience and preparation: “Your essays matter. Invest time and effort in them. Also, build strong friendships – having a reliable support system makes a big difference.”

In a lively close to the event, singer Veronica Luggya, known by her stage name Vinka, delivered an energetic performance and spoke to the scholars as an Equi Life Ambassador.

“Your journey is just beginning,” Vinka encouraged the students. “Believe in yourselves, stay grounded, and use every opportunity to shine.”

The Equity Leadership Program continues to position itself as a cornerstone of transformative youth development in Uganda, providing academic support, leadership training, and access to global opportunities.
