Environmental conservation: Masaka City, Centenary Bank plant trees

MASAKA – Masaka City leadership has partnered with Centenary Bank to promote environmental conservation as well as beautification of the city through planting trees.

Centenary Bank general manager for Corporate Communications and Marketing, Beatrice Lugalambi presided over the tree planting activity at Masaka Liberation Square, saying that they will plant 5,000 trees. ”The tree planting programme is part of our social corporate responsibility. The project will green Masaka City and conserve its beautiful green environment,” she said.

Masaka City covers an estimated area of 362 square kilometres and more than 89, 553 acres of land.

Masaka City mayor, Florence Namayanja said since she assumed office, she has been laying strategies to ensure that the city has a green environment as well as infrastructural development like construction of roads and installation of street lights.

Masaka city planner, Martin Kigozi said both the technical and political leadership in the city will ensure that more than 2,000 trees are planted along all road reserves.

”We have already designed the city for greening and now we are planting trees and flowers to beautify it further,” he said. He said they have also installed 1,000 solar-powered lights on all streets and access roads in the city.

With agro-tourism, Masaka city natural resources officer, Deborah Nabadda said they are encouraging all the people in the city to engage in conserving the environment whose flora and fauna will attract more tourists.

She said, ” A number of eco-tourism activities like craft making, watching of unique bird species like shoebills, grey crowned cranes and sitatunga animals are visible at Nabajjuzi wetland system.”

Nabajjuzi was in 2006 declared an international recognised Ramsar site for the conservation of threatened birds and animal species.
