Embattled Among bows out of speakership race

KAMPALA, May 18, 2026 — Facing mounting scrutiny and ongoing investigations, Anita Annet Among has officially withdrawn from the race for Speaker of Uganda’s 12th Parliament of Uganda, pledging loyalty to the ruling National Resistance Movement [NRM] and President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni.

In a statement issued hours ago, Among, the former speaker of the 11th Parliament, said hours ago on her X, formerly Twitter that her decision followed “wide consultations and deep introspection” aimed at preserving “harmony and clarity” within the party ahead of the highly anticipated parliamentary leadership contest.

“I wish to categorically and unequivocally state that I will not be offering myself for the Speakership race of the 12th Parliament,” Among said.

The embattled legislator expressed gratitude to Museveni, the NRM leadership, and members of the 11th Parliament for entrusting her with the roles of Deputy Speaker and later Speaker over the last five years.

She also thanked her family, friends, and political allies for standing by her during a turbulent period marked by allegations currently under investigation by state agencies.

“In the meantime, I pledge to continue cooperating with all ongoing investigations as initiated by the relevant organs of the state to get to the root of all the allegations raised,” she said.

Among further pledged her support to whichever candidates are ultimately endorsed by President Museveni and the NRM for the top parliamentary positions in the incoming Parliament.

“I pledge my total support to the candidates who will be endorsed by the President and the Party, and implore all colleague MPs of the 12th Parliament to do the same,” she added.

Her withdrawal is expected to reshape the contest for the Speakership and could intensify behind-the-scenes lobbying within the ruling party as preparations for the 12th Parliament gather momentum.

Despite stepping aside from the race, Among signaled her willingness to continue serving the country in any capacity assigned by the President and the party.

“I shall remain available to the service of my country as the party and the President may assign me,” she stated.

The development comes at a critical moment for the NRM as it seeks to maintain unity ahead of the next parliamentary term amid increasing public scrutiny over governance and accountability issues.
