DOHA, November 16, 2023 -A high-level delegation from Egypt’s General Authority for Construction and Housing Cooperatives [ CHC ], led by Major General Engineer Waleed Farouk Elbaroudi, the Chairman of the Board of Directors, recently concluded a visit to the Gulf Organisation for Research & Development [GORD] headquarters in Qatar Science and Technology Park, Doha. The primary objective of this visit was to explore collaboration opportunities with GORD in implementing sustainable solutions in Egypt.

CHC, an economic body affiliated with the Egyptian Ministry of Housing, Utilities and Urban Communities, plays a crucial role in establishing innovative partnerships between both local communities and the public and private sectors. It focuses on making housing affordable and available within new cities as part of the government’s comprehensive effort to provide housing for Egyptians, guiding and providing innovative solutions for the cooperative housing projects in Egypt. Recognising the importance of sustainable development, the delegation sought to leverage GORD’s expertise and experience in this field to benefit Egypt.

Leading GORD’s team in hosting the delegation was Founding Chairman Dr. Yousef Mohammed Alhorr, who said, “We believe that sustainability knows no borders, and through collaboration and knowledge exchange, we can build a greener and more sustainable future together. The visit by the delegation from Egypt’s General Authority for Construction and Housing Cooperatives is an important step which we believe will be foundational in fostering a partnership aimed at implementing sustainable solutions in Egypt and the wider MENA region. Following our fruitful meetings with the Egyptian delegation, we are excited about the potential for substantial collaboration that lies ahead.”

Major General Elbaroudi, during his visit praised GORD for its pioneering efforts in advancing sustainability and dedication to sustainability as well as its innovative ecofriendly solutions. He stated, “GORD’s commitment to sustainability, with GSAS, International Green Mark and carbon programs is a remarkable initiative. Egypt can learn and collaborate for sustainable housing solutions. The visit showcased potential collaboration between CHC and GORD, with a focus on implementing GSAS in CHC. I look forward to a strong foundation for future partnerships in sustainable housing and urban development.”

During the visit, the delegation engaged in a series of discussions and presentations centered on sustainable development and potential cooperation between the two entities. One of the highlights was comprehensive presentations by senior members of GORD, who provided insights into GORD’s activities, the Global Sustainability Assessment System [GSAS], and its successful implementation in various districts, buildings, and infrastructure projects across Qatar as well as the Gulf region.

Discussions also delved into the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism and how GSAS plays a pivotal role in certification as a carbon reduction verifier using the International Green Mark – an ecolabelling system for products and building materials. This discussion highlighted the importance of sustainability in reducing carbon emissions using ecologically responsible management products.

Notably, the meetings included proposals for the potential implementation of GSAS in Egypt. These proposals aimed to identify opportunities for sustainable housing projects and the sharing of knowledge and best practices between the two nations.

The delegates from Egypt also had the opportunity to witness Qatar’s commitment to sustainability through visits to various sustainable projects such as Qatar Rail’s metro stations and Lusail City, which is a model sustainable city with GSAS-certified towers and residential buildings. They also visited The Pearl Qatar, a city where GSAS Operations certification is being implemented on numerous buildings, further emphasizing the importance of sustainability in urban development.

The visit laid a solid foundation for forging a meaningful partnership in the realm of sustainable housing and urban development between Egypt’s CHC and GORD. Following these meetings, it is anticipated that a substantial collaboration will materialize between GORD and CHC through joint projects soon.
