Educationists ask Gulu University graduates to invest in agriculture
GULU – New graduates from Gulu University have been asked to take advantage of the agricultural value chains to create jobs for themselves.
At least 1245 students from the various academic disciplines graduated during the university’s 17th graduation ceremony held last Friday.
Addressing the congregation at the university’s grounds, the Vice-Chancellor George Openjuru urged the new graduates to use research, innovation, and skills acquired from the university to address the problem of food security and eliminate hunger in the northern region and the country at large.
“The problem is the country isn’t the bad social economic status that we see now but the lack of exploitation of the resources for which the Country is very much endowed with,” Openjuru explained.
Meanwhile, the university’s Chancellor Prof. Fredrick Kayanja who commended the graduates for completing their studies has asked them to take advantage of the Pariah Development Model [PDM].
Prof. Kayanja explained that the government has developed new approaches for poverty eradication using the PDM which the graduates need to promote as they go back to their communities.
“We have prepared you with the necessary skills for community transformation and you must become the ambassadors to promote this government program of parish development model,” he added.
He further explained that the four acres approach of production would mean that the community can get rid of poverty even with the utilization of the limited land.
The State Minister for Sport Denis Hamson Obua who represented the First Lady and Minister of Education and Sports Janet Kataaha Museveni at the function urged the university to continue promoting research and innovation.
Minister Obua revealed that the government was looking for more funding to boost the infrastructure of the university to accommodate 10,000 students.
Meanwhile, the current enrolment of students in the university stands at 5,000, pursuing different academic programmes ranging from undergraduate studies, Doctorate and postgraduate studies.
