New partnership to support Omoro farmer groups with seeds

OMORO- Sixteen farmer groups in Odek Sub-county in Omoro district will soon be able to acquire planting seeds from the East African Ministries [EAM] under the Seed Effect Uganda Project.

The new project, according to its initiators, aims to fight economic and well as spiritual poverty by providing access to economic empowerment, education, and spiritual discipleship in Odek Subcounty.

Fiona Madra Comfort, the Chief Executive Officer EAM said the intention of Seed Effect Uganda is to empower the already existing groups which the organization formed by supporting them economically through training and provision of some tangible items such as seeds.

Ms Madra, while giving the overview of the project on Thursday this week, at the Omoro district headquarters said that Omoro district is among the pilot districts in Northern Uganda.

According to Madra, the project will have three cycles in a period of three years with each running for nine months adding that the program will be rolled out to other subcounties depending on the success of the 16 selected groups in Odek Subcounty.

Walter Komakech Oyoo, the Omoro deputy Resident District Commissioner hoped the training on spiritual components to cause change in people’s lives.

EAM/4Africa has been operating in Omoro-Odek Subcounty focusing on water, sanitation and hygiene [WASH] programmes through drilling and rehabilitation of boreholes, sensitization of communities on hygiene and sanitation; so far, 60 boreholes have been drilled, 36 rehabilitated and village chiefs and communities sensitised.

In 2021, Dero-she capital, a local community-based organization (CBO) started helping more than 170 rural women in Amuru and Omoro districts to profitably engage in agriculture by extending farm credit to them.

Instead of cash, the organization, said it would give farmers credit in form of services like ploughing and inputs or farm implements hand hoes and seeds.

Innocent Piloya, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Dero-she capital told theCooperator then that most times, rural women have agribusiness ideas but lack support to implement them.
