KAMPALA, July 25, 2025 — The Secretary General of the East African Community [EAC], Veronica Nduva, has concluded a three-day official visit to the Republic of Uganda, marked by high-level engagements aimed at advancing regional integration and strengthening cooperation among Partner States.
During her visit, Nduva paid a courtesy call on President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, at State House, Entebbe. Their discussions centred on priority areas for regional integration, including the promotion of intra-regional trade and the development of shared infrastructure.
Museveni reaffirmed Uganda’s commitment to the EAC integration agenda, emphasising the vital role of collaborative efforts in achieving economic prosperity across the region.
In a separate engagement, the Secretary General officiated at the closing ceremony of the EAC Capacity Building Programme for Women and Youth in Fisheries. The regional initiative aims to equip women and young people with the skills, knowledge, and resources necessary to participate more effectively in the fisheries value chain. The event underscored the EAC’s commitment to inclusive economic growth, particularly by supporting marginalised groups through sustainable fisheries development.
“This programme reflects our determination to empower women and youth, who are the backbone of our region’s socio-economic fabric. Investing in them is investing in the future of East Africa,” Nduva stated during the ceremony.
While in Uganda, the Secretary General [on the right in the above photo] also visited the headquarters of the Lake Victoria Fisheries Organisation [LVFO] in Jinja. She received briefings on ongoing projects supporting sustainable fisheries management, scientific research, and cross-border collaboration within the Lake Victoria Basin.
Ms Nduva stressed the importance of evidence-based policymaking, environmental sustainability, and the strategic role of LVFO in implementing the EAC’s Blue Economy agenda.
“The LVFO is a key institution in ensuring sustainable fisheries in the region. Continued support for its work is essential to securing food security, safeguarding livelihoods, and preserving aquatic ecosystems,” she said.
The Secretary General’s visit reaffirmed the EAC Secretariat’s ongoing support for Partner States in their pursuit of the goals outlined in the EAC Treaty, particularly in the areas of economic development, environmental conservation, and regional cooperation.
