Dominican Republic cooperative latest to join ICA
BRUSSELS-The International Cooperative Alliance [ICA] reports it welcomed a new member last December: Cooperativa de Ahorro y Credito Herrera, Inc. from the Dominican Republic.
According to ICA, COOP-HERRERA is a savings and credit cooperative with 39,333 individual members and a turnover of EUR 118,038,238.
“The coop already follows the ICA’s guidelines and proposals, and frequently participates in its activities. COOP-HERRERA has joined the ICA as a member in order to strengthen the cooperative integration system and be directly linked to the ICA,” ICA says on its website.
With the latest addition, it means ICA now has 315 member organisations, of which 273 are full members and 42 are Associate Members, from 107 countries.
In September last year, ICA welcomed Cooperativa de Ahorro y Crédito CACEENP Limitada from Honduras and Coopérative Centrale d’épargne et de crédit du Kivu [COOCEC-KIVU]from the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
“A financial cooperative, CACEENP was founded by employees of the National Port Company. Today the cooperative is open to all citizens. With more than 38,000 members, it is the country’s sixth most important financial cooperative.”
On the other hand, COOCEC-KIVU is an umbrella organisation for primary savings and credit cooperatives. It comprises seven savings and credit co-ops with 25,000 individual savings members and 2,000 borrowers.
The apex focuses on consolidating the links that unite the COOPECs and to defend their interests, promoting their growth and development, promoting the expansion of the cooperative philosophy, tackling poverty and stimulating inter-cooperation between members.
