Dokolo RDC recovers seven bicycles sold by village chairpersons

DOKOLO-Dokolo resident district commissioner, Barbara Akech has recovered seven bicycles allegedly sold off by local council one and two chairpersons.

Recently the government distributed bicycles to facilitate the work of the village and parish leaders in the country. The offer was to ease the movement of leaders as they mobilise people to embrace government programmes.

According to the Ministry of Local Government, there are 70,626 villages and 10,594 parishes in the country, and a good number of the leaders have received the bicycles, though those living in the hilly areas say it is difficult to ride them there.

Akech said she got an intelligence report implicating seven LCI chairpersons in the sale of the bicycles donated to them and alerted police and sub-county security officers to investigate and furnish her with the report.

“We swung into action and within two weeks we recovered seven bicycles which was sold between Shs 150,000-200, 000,” Akech said.

Without revealing the identity of the chairpersons saying it will jeopardise investigations, she identified the villages as Opwooanyira, Apado, Aningo Central Ward, Aluti, Awei, Adyeny, and Alela.

Recently according to LC3 of Adwir Sub-county in Alebtong district, Paddy Francis Ogwang Abwang, said they are also hunting for an LCI of Telela village, Joel Ola over the allegation of selling off the bicycle procured by government using taxpayers’ money.

Abwang said the suspect is in hiding after he allegedly sold the bicycle at Shs 280,000, claiming he was raising money to pay school fees for his children.

Dokolo and Alebtong districts received 1,349 bicycles.
