Local governments have been advised to grow cooperatives in an effort aimed at solving the ever-increasing youth unemployment problem.
Youth unemployment is the main challenge districts are grappling with to productively engage young people.
“Unemployment and lack of decent work for youths should be addressed by districts,” said, Albert Wamboka the chairman Halala Halala saving and credit cooperative in Busia district.
He noted that co-operatives can create several working opportunities and better working conditions for youth
Cooperatives he said, can help the youth to gain experience and find work in addition to offering them opportunities for vocational and professional training.
Speaking in an interview with the Cooperator magazine, Wamboka said cooperatives are important vehicles for propelling sustainable development.
He appealed to district commercial officers to start sharing with young people successful examples and practical information that can help them to establish cooperatives.
He called on the young people to stop imagining that co-operatives are only relevant to farmers saying the scope for operating as a co-operative cut across several sectors of the economy.
