Demand for value addition when you have enough production, farmers told

NWOYA-Farmers in Nwoya district have been advised to demand for value addition facilities when they are sure of dependable production.

According to the coordinator of Operation Wealth Creation [OWC] in Acholi Sub-region Rtd. Maj. Gen. Francis Achoka, many farmers in the area are producing little despite demanding that they be given value addition facilities.

Achoka instead has advised farmers who want to engage in value addition processes to seek advice from the district agriculture and commercial officers for technical support.

“When you hear them talking of value addition, you might think that they have a lot in stock,’’ he said, adding that if farmers want to engage in value addition, then they must consistently produce enough commodities.

For instance, he said dairy farmers, rice growers, and cassava farmers in Nwoya district are still not producing enough to call for value addition facilities.

To him, the idea of the farmers having value addition facilities is good but they should ensure to available enough produce so that the facilities don’t lie idle.

The district commercial officer, Kenneth Kitara, also said farmers who continue to demand for value addition have no capacity to sustain it since the production is low.

“Those who reach out to our office, demanding for support in the areas of value addition, we always carry out an assessment before we direct them where they can be supported depending on what we get on the ground,’’ he said.

“Well, we appreciate the fact that many farmers are demanding for value addition, but the emphasis is on production. It would be a waste of resources when machines are put in place and they cannot be put into use.”
