Cultural leader urges Teso youth to embrace saving culture

Increased savings may help individuals meet day-to-day financial demands and invest in their futures

SOROTI, January 27, 2025 – The Iteso cultural leader, His Highness Paul Sande Emolot, has urged the youth to embrace a culture of saving and work hard to combat poverty within their communities.

Speaking to hundreds of youth gathered for the second edition of the Young Ateker Symposium at Soroti Senior Secondary School on Saturday, Emolot called on the youth to change their mindset and engage with the money economy.

“Even if you make Shs 2,000, Shs 5,000, or Shs 10,000, save at least 1,000 or 2,000 and grow your money,” said the Emorimor [King].

He pointed out that some young people are too lazy and depend too much on their parents for everything.

“Young men here, don’t wait for your parents to give you money to pay school fees. Go out there and make money,” Emolot advised.

The Emorimor also encouraged the youth to avoid activities that do not contribute to their development, such as wasting time in trading centres playing unproductive games like “Ludo.” Instead, he urged them to engage in activities that could generate income.

The Young Ateker Symposium was organised by Lu’Ateker Concepts under the theme: “Empowering Young Entrepreneurs for Sustainable Growth.”

Emolot further urged the Ateker communities to invest in profitable ventures such as poultry, goat farming, and cattle farming. He also encouraged beneficiaries of the Parish Development Model (PDM) to make the best use of the funds provided to improve their livelihoods.

“Embrace and utilise the PDM funds well to change your economic situation,” Emolot advised the youth.

In his closing remarks, Emolot called on the Iteso communities to contribute resources towards the construction of the Iteso palace.

Meanwhile, George William Okoit, the Executive Director of Lu’Ateker Concepts, emphasised the importance of parents training their children in entrepreneurial skills.

“Parents should begin training their children in skills that will help them survive,” Okoit said.

He also revealed the launch of the Ateker Business Forum and the SACCO, both aimed at lobbying and advocating for improved business practices among members.

Eng. Paul Angeret Godfrey, the Managing Director of ArchTechnocraft Limited, encouraged entrepreneurs to develop strong character traits such as discipline, passion, patience, empathy, and honesty to succeed in business.

Eunice Okiror Porotum Agoro, the Regional Head of the Uganda Registration Services Bureau in Mbale, urged the business community to register their businesses.

Tonny Malisa, an official from the Bank of Uganda, highlighted that many people go through school without receiving personal financial education.

“The problem is not about how much you earn, but how you manage what you earn,” Malisa said.

He advised entrepreneurs to save their money in supervised financial institutions to avoid being cheated.

Eng. Angeret also urged the youth and others to avoid alcoholism, drug abuse, reckless behaviour, pride, pretence, and accumulating excessive debt, noting that these factors can hinder success.

Increased savings may help individuals meet day-to-day financial demands and invest in their futures. Furthermore, increasing the savings rate in the general population may help promote large-scale changes in a country’s economy by allowing increased investment in productive resources.
