Court awards over Shs 700mln to former staff of All Saints University Lango
LIRA– The Industrial Court has awarded former staff of All Saints University, Lango Shs 718 million after they sued the university for non-payment of salaries and wrongful dismissal.
Justice Anthony Wabire Musana while delivering his ruling ordered the university to pay 15 former staff in three equal installments commencing on July 1, 2023, and continue until the payment is completed.
Early last year, the former staff dragged the university to court for failure to pay salary arrears and un-lawful termination of their contracts.
The case was among 33 cases in the Lango Sub-region scheduled by the Industrial Court to be disposed of within three weeks starting mid-February.
“In an event of default on any of the installments, the claimants shall be entitled to interest on the outstanding sum at the rate of 24 percent per annum until the payment is full,” Musana added.
Court said the two parties reached a settlement. Each party is to bear its own costs.
The university`s vice chancellor, Prof Andrew Cula welcomed the judgment, saying they will pay the claimants and promote reconciliation.
The former staff of the university said though court didn’t award damages, they are happy with its ruling on the matter.
