Cooperative societies in Busia district have been encouraged to plant trees to ensure a sustainable ecosystem.
Francis Asango who has been mobilizing communities neighboring West Bugwe forest reserve to stop encroaching on the forest reserve said the cooperatives in Busia and the country at large can significantly contribute to the achievement of the global goal on climate change action.
“Cooperatives can help the country control carbon emissions and the effects of climate change,” Asango said.
He urged cooperatives to invest in and sensitizing the communities in the areas where they operate to practice activities such as agroforestry and proper waste management.
Severe changes in weather patterns and the adverse effects of climate change, Asango said, calls for concerted efforts by both the central and local governments to restore the forest cover.
He asked the ministry of environment to impose a burn on cutting trees.
