ALEBTONG-The government has kicked off the construction of Awei Seed Secondary School in Alebtong district in a bid to enroll more students in secondary education level.
The construction of Shs 3.3 billion school under Uganda Intergovernmental Fiscal Transfer [Ugift] was days ago launched by the Government Chief Whip, Denis Hamson Obua who is also Ajuri County Member of Parliament.
The scope of works include administration block, VIP latrine blocks, three classroom blocks, teachers’ houses, kitchen, two science laboratories, playground, multipurpose hall and information communication technology library.
The contract to undertake the construction works was awarded to Wangi General Enterprises and the project will run for 18 months. It is being funded by the World Bank.
Addressing residents during the groundbreaking ceremony at Owalo Primary School, Whip Obua said the government will construct three new seed secondary schools in Alebtong as its vision to ease access to education to the communities.
“Within this short time, the government has launched the construction of Angetta and Awei seed secondary schools and soon we shall bless the construction of Adwir secondary School,” Obua said.
“To accomplish all these projects including the one [Awei Seed Secondary School] we are launching, the government will spend over Shs 8bln,” Obua added.
“All these are aimed at fulfilling the National Resistance Movement manifesto of access to quality and affordable education for all Ugandans,” Obua said.
Other projects in the pipeline include construction of Amugu and Alebtong seed schools.
Alebtong district Woman MP, Dorcas Acen advised parents to take advantage of the school to fight illiteracy in the community, access secondary education, fight high school dropout and early pregnancy.
She said because of the two years lockdown to reduce the spread of COVID-19, a number of girls in the district were impregnated and abandoned studies.
She said as a result of that she has planned to raise over Shs 500 million to establish and equip Alebtong Skilling and Empowerment Centre to train girls in vocational skills.
The resident district commissioner, Robert Adiama, lauded President Museveni saying it will ease access to education, especially for the poor who are unable to send their children to expensive schools.
The district LC5, David Kennedy Odongo commended President Museveni for some of the projects accomplished in the district and await commissioning.
He identified the projects as the construction of Awei and Angetta health units which cost Shs1.2bln including Abia which was commissioned early this year.
